The First Slot Machine

The first 'slot machine' was invented by Charles Fey in 1895. Fey linked up with the Mills Novelty Company in 1905, and then the Mills "Liberty Bell" was created - a machine with three spinning reels. The machine was very heavy being made from cast iron.

These machines became increasingly popular and the creation and manufacture of varied machines also grew accordingly. At that time, symbols featured on the slot machines were horseshoes, diamonds, spades, hearts and bells. The early first mechanical slot machines hosted sweets or cigarettes as prizes for winning slots combinations.

They were located primarily in bars and cigar shops. Simple and successful the slot machine offered players both excitement and a chance to win the jackpot with nothing more than the pull of a handle. Playing slots quickly became a popular pastime through out the United States.

Moving On

In the 1960's advanced electronics transformed the slot machine for up until this time slot machines had been completely mechanical and it was quite simple for players to cheat.

The electronic revolution of the slot machines changed two major aspects of the slots games in that it became easier for the owners to control and it became more difficult for the player to cheat. The owners were also able to offer large prizes as well which of course attracted even more players to them.

When they hit the casinos in the early 70's they well not at first welcomed due in part to the move away from the standard reel machines. However that all change after the introduction of video poker in the 1980's when video slots suddenly started to gain in popularity.

Slot Machines Today

With the advent of the Internet it was obvious that it wouldn't take long for slot machines to go online and it didn't. In the 1990's the first machines started to appear and nowadays you'll find all variations of slot machines available. 3 reel, 5 reel, video slots, bonus slots, progressives and more are all there to play. With more and more advances taking place slot machines too are moving on and now becoming even more interactive.
