How it's made up
In French (and European) casinos the Roulette wheel is made of wood with a diameter of 56 centimeters and has 37 slots, numbered from 0
through 36. All Roulette players, and even those who don't play, are well acquainted with the appearance of the Roulette wheel and the betting layout.
But maybe not everyone knows why the numbers are red and black: well, the sum of the digits which make up each black number is even, while the sum of the digits which make up each red number is odd!
For example, 15 is black because the sum of 1 and 5 is 6, an even number.
Similarly, 23 is red because the sum of 2 and 3 is 5, an odd number.
However, if this principle were carried to its logical conclusion, we would have 20 red numbers and only 16 black numbers. To eliminate this inequality, which would have a negative effect on the game, two red numbers (10 and 28) were changed to black. The Table Layout
Some others signs and symbols appear next to the numbers on the Roulette table for instance.
Manque (the numbers from 1 to 18), Passe (the numbers from 19 to 36), Pair (even), Impair (odd), and two diamond-shaped symbols (red and black).
Also, six squares, three on the left and three on the right, can be found at the bottom of the table: these are marked P12 (12 Premier, or first dozen, the numbers from 1 to 12), M12 (12 Milieu, or second dozen, the numbers from 13 to 24), and D12 (12 Derniere, or third dozen, the numbers from 25 to 36).
Stakes on dozens are placed at the center of the corresponding squares.
Finally, three empty squares are found at the center position of the bottom of the table.
These squares are used for placing stakes on columns of numbers.
When a player places a stake on the first square on the left, they are betting on the vertical column of numbers from 1 to 34. Game procedure - How the game begins.
The croupier in charge of spinning the wheel, who is also known as the bouler, rotates the wheel and launches the ball in the opposite direction.
Another point: at each play, the croupier must change the direction that he spins the wheel. When the ball begins to slow down and is about to drop into the lucky compartment, the croupier calls "Rien ne va plus" (No more bets) to warn the players that they can no longer bet on that play.
When the ball falls into one of the 37 compartment on the wheel, the bouleur announces the number and the simple combinations which have won. After each play, the croupiers rake in the losing bets and pay the winning players. More About Roulette
